Free roundtrip flight anywhere in North America | Amex Rewards card offer

The American Express® AeroplanPlus®* Gold Card

It's not often that I plug a travel rewards card. In fact I don't think I ever have. When a travel blogger posts about such things, it's usually just a thinly disguised attempt to earn some referral income or benefit from the credit card companies. And I suppose this post is no different as you will soon find out.

But I can honestly say that this is one of the best travel rewards card offers I've ever seen, and one of the very few that's actually compelled me to sign up and share it with friends and family.

IMPORTANT: As of September 1, 2014 the AMEX Aeroplan Plus Gold Card offer mentioned in this article has changed. You now get 26,000 Aeroplan miles instead of 30,000 - and the annual fee ($120) for this card is no longer waived for the first year.

BUT, American Express is now waiving the annual fee for the first year on a *different* card, the Amex Gold Rewards Card (yes, it has a similar sounding name, but is a completely different card)..

With the Amex Gold Rewards Card, you can get a bonus of 25,000 'Amex Membership Rewards Points' for signing up. And these points can be converted into Aeroplan Miles at a 1:1 ratio, at no cost. .

So basically, since the Amex Gold Rewards Card annual fee is being waived, you are getting 25,000 Aeroplan miles for free (after you convert them).

If you read through the rest of this article about the old offer, pretty much all of the same advice and terms will apply. Just remember to use the signup link that takes you to the correct card, the Amex Gold Rewards Card, which is:.

https://www.americanexpress.com/canada/en/mgm/mgmeeApplynow.cgi?mgmerCard=goldCard&MGM_URN=AAAAEggRAxoTDw==&CPID=100074907

The rest of the links in the article below will take you to the Aeroplan Plus Gold Card, which as I mentioned, is no longer free..

The free flight offer

American Express is offering a staggering 30,000 Aeroplan bonus points to anyone who signs up for their AMEX Aeroplan Plus Gold Card.

As you can see from the Aeroplan rewards chart, this is enough for a free flight to anywhere in Canada or the Continental USA and still have 5,000 points left over.

In fact, if it's a short haul flight (anywhere between Toronto and Manitoba, Quebec, Ontario, Nunavut, or virtually anywhere in the NE region of the U.S.A.) - it's actually enough for 2 free flights!

But another interesting thing about this offer is that after you've signed up, you will receive a referral link of your own, and for every person that signs up for the card through your link you receive another 10,000 Aeroplan points on top of the 30,000 !

So basically, for every 3 friends or family that signs up for the card through your link, you receive another free flight. There doesn't appear to be a limitation on how many people you can refer and how many points or free flights you can earn.

If you send it to 7 people, and they all sign up for the card, you'd earn an additional 70,000 Aeroplan points, which is enough for a free trip anywhere in the world! And really, it wouldn't be that difficult to convince 7 people to sign up, considering they're each guaranteed a free flight of their own when they do.

Ok, what's the catch? Is there an annual fee?

Amazingly, American Express is waiving the annual fee for the first year, so this is truly a free offer at no cost to you. Of course, they are hoping that you'll keep the card beyond the first year, at which point there is an annual fee for the card.

*But*, you can cancel the card at any time and keep the 30,000 points without ever having to pay a dime! Just be sure to set up a reminder in your calendar to cancel the card before the 1 year is up.

The only other condition to note is that you need to spend a minimum of $500 (total) with the card within the first 3 months, to receive the 30,000 Aeroplan point bonus.

How do I get the 30,000 free Aeroplan points?

1. Go to the following offer page at the American Express website:

https://www.americanexpress.com/canada/en/mgm/mgmeeApplynow.cgi?mgmerCard=aeroPlanGoldCard&MGM_URN=AAAAEgEREhMJCg==&CPID=999999370

The offer is the first one at the top, titled 'The American Express® AeroplanPlus®* Gold Card'

2. Put a checkmark beside 'I have read and accept the referral program terms'

3. Hit the Apply Now button

Fill out the application, and you're done!

*Note* You do need to use the offer link above to receive the bonus 30,000 Aeroplan points. If you search for the offer on the American Express website without going through the link above, it will only show a bonus of 20,000 Aeroplan points.

Common questions...

Is it really a truly 'free flight' ?

Not entirely. Airlines can still charge the 'taxes & fees' when booking an Aeroplan flight, meaning the flight is not entirely free. Typically you end up paying around $100-$150 to redeem your 'free roundtrip flight' with Aeroplan points no matter how they were earned.

Certain airlines do not charge some of these extra fees when redeeming Aeroplan points, such as United, SWISS, and Air New Zealand. Air Canada definitely does though! I usually avoid redeeming with Air Canada, if possible, for this reason.

Here's a good article on how to redeem Aeroplan points with airlines other than Air Canada.

I'm going to get my significant other to sign up for this as well so we can get 60,000 points between us. Is it possible to pool the points together into one Aeroplan account?

No, you will each need to sign up separately to each earn the 30,000 points. And each of those 30,000 bonus points will need to be linked to a separate Aeroplan account.

One thing you can do though, is have one person sign up (earning 30,000 points), and then send your referral link to your significant other to sign them up. Your significant other will receive 30,000 points of their own, and you'll receive 10,000 extra points for signing them up. Meaning you will receive 70,000 free points between the two of you. Not too shabby!

Where do I find my referral link after signing up?

Log into the American Express website and click on the 'Rewards' tab. Then click on 'refer a friend' to send them an e-mail with your referral link.

Beware that the referral e-mail may end up in the SPAM folder of the e-mail account of the people you're trying to refer. At least, it did for me, in my Gmail account.

To avoid this, you may want to try to find your actual referral link and send that link to your friend's and family in a more personal e-mail. For example, my referral link is:

https://www.americanexpress.com/canada/en/mgm/mgmeeApplynow.cgi?mgmerCard=aeroPlanGoldCard&MGM_URN=AAAAEg0SHRIeAg==&CPID=999999370

Yours will be identical, except for the part in bold, which should be different.

How many points can I accumulate with this card using it normally?

In addition to the 30,000 point bonus for signing up, you will receive...

1 Aeroplan mile for every dollar spent, up to the first $10,000 annually
1.25 Aeroplan miles for every dollar spent over $10,000 annually

Seems crazy not to sign up. What's to stop people from cancelling the card as soon as they redeem their 30,000 bonus Aeroplan points for the free flight?

Nothing, people do it all the time. American Express is just hoping a certain percentage of people will keep the card beyond the first year. They know that the vast majority will cancel the card, and from what I've heard, it's very painless, with just one phone call, to an American Express agent that cancels hundreds of these cards a week and doesn't try to convince you to keep it.

Does it impact your credit score if you cancel the card before the first year is up?

Nope!

And you are receiving a 10,000 point referral bonus from American Express when I sign up?

Yes, to be very transparent about this, when American Express gives you your free 30,000 Aeroplan points, they also give me a 10,000 point bonus for referring you, assuming you signed up using one of the links on this page.

I already have enough Aeroplan points of my own for a few flights, but could always use the extra points to buy some gift cards through the Aeroplan store to help pay for server hosting & e-mail fees, and other costs associated with running the site.

Or if you would rather see those 10,000 points donated to a charity just pick one from the Aeroplan Donation Page and then give me a shout by e-mail or through the contact page after you have submitted your application to let me know which one to donate them to. I'll send you back a screenshot of the donation after it is made.

Okay, okay, I'm convinced. What's the signup link again?

https://www.americanexpress.com/canada/en/mgm/mgmeeApplynow.cgi?mgmerCard=aeroPlanGoldCard&MGM_URN=AAAAEgEREhMJCg==&CPID=999999370

This offer is open to residents of Canada only.

I still have a question!

Comment below and I'll try to answer it as best I can.

    Hi Khoa,

A few years ago, Aeroplan changed their terms so that Aeroplan points never expire (they used to expire after 7 years).

HOWEVER, you need to make sure to have at least one transaction activity on your account once a year, to keep your Aeroplan account open. This can be as simple as using your Aeroplan card when you fill up with gas at Esso.

    Hi James,

Nope, it won't affect the number of bonus points you receive. I was already an Aeroplan member, and just entered my current Aeroplan account number on the application when I signed up. The 30,000 bonus points were deposited into this account.

The last thing I want is to discourage those who seem excited with this offer. I have no knowledge or experience with this Card therefore I can't comment and as a very experienced traveller I wish nothing but the best to those who love travelling too.

I do however want to mention that I went through a horrible experience with Amex , 2 years ago when they claimed charges I wasn't supposed to pay, even though I warned them a few months in advance about the problems a situation was causing. They didn't listen and therefore I promised myself not to deal with Amex ever again.

    Good luck everyone!

    Hi Louise,

I would generally recommend signing up for Aeroplan first (it's free) and then entering your Aeroplan account number on the American Express application.

However, if you don't have an Aeroplan number, and you sign up for the American Express offer, they will create the Aeroplan account for you. I've also heard you can e-mail or call them and they will tell you what Aeroplan number you were assigned.

No problem James! As far as I know American Express has not announced an expiry for this particular points promotion. Some people have asked over the phone, and they are usually told that no expiry date has been announced.

I do have a decent number of points, probably enough for more trips than I could ever take, since the limiting factor seems to be finding the time!

Do you have to spend the $500 and then you get your points?"

Thanks Sonia! Yes, on the next American Express statement that is generated after you have used the card for $500 worth of purchases, you will see your 30,000 free Aeroplan miles. Just to note that the statements are generated once per month.

Hey, I was just browsing through the AmEx pages for this card and came across this tidbit on the referral a friend page...

"To thank you for your recommendations, you could earn a referral bonus of up to 50,000 Aeroplan®* Miles when you refer up to five of your friends or family members – 10,000 miles for each approved referral."

I wonder if this is new, since you don't seem to have a limit to receiving these bonus points...

It also states in there that you must only refer family, friends, or people you actually know.

Hey Chris, quick question, well a couple.

    1) Why is that we only get the 30,000 bonus points from your link, is it a promotion you worked out with this site?

    2) After applying for the car and giving referrals to friends, would they also get a 5,000 bonus when referred from myself so, 30,000 (and I receive the 10,000) or would they get a 25,000 points?

       Chris_Myden on April 24th, 2014

    Hi Daniel,

I recall seeing that ''up to 5 people' blurb when I signed up as well. I can tell you for certain though, that you can refer as many as you want with the same referral link. It seems to be more a reference to the limitation on the American Express 'refer a friend' web form, which allows you to enter 5 names at a time.

Regarding sending it to friends or family, I'm pretty sure that's just a clause to cover themselves in the event that someone abusively spams the offer.

"Hey Chris, quick question, well a couple.

    1) Why is that we only get the 30,000 bonus points from your link, is it a promotion you worked out with this site?

    Hi James,

No, it's not a promotion that's specific to me or my site. As long as you sign up under *someone's* American Express Aeroplan Gold referral link, you will get 30,000 bonus points. It doesn't have to be mine.

It just needs to be through a referral link, because the same offer on American Express's website only gives you 25,000 points. (It was 20,000 when I wrote this post, but they recently upped it).

And when you sign up, and get your own referral link, anyone that signs up under your link will receive 30,000 as well.

    2) After applying for the card and giving referrals to friends, would they also get a 5,000 bonus when referred from myself so, 30,000 (and I receive the 10,000) or would they get a 25,000 points?"

Yes, when your friend uses your referral link to sign up for the card, they will get the 30,000 bonus points (assuming they are approved and meet the $500 spend condition). At the same time, you will get an additional 10,000 bonus points from American Express for referring that friend.

Hi - just wondering if the people who sign up using my referral link don't spend $500 in the first three months do I lose the 10,000 referral points? Thanks.

    Has Chris_Myden been here?
       Chris_Myden on April 25th, 2014

    Hi Lillian,

In my experience, you receive the 10,000 referral points on your next billing statement, right after the people are approved, and before they even meet the $500 spend condition.

And once those points are in your Aeroplan account, they're yours, and they can't be taken back by American Express.

For your own 30,000 bonus points however, I know you definitely need to meet the $500 spend condition first, and then the points show up on the next billing statement after that.

Thanks for the tip Chris, one last quick question, is there any limit to the referrals, if I posted my link on a website like yourself (but probably a thread) would they take away my aeroplan points for abuse or whatever other reason or is it completely cool. Btw how many referrals have you collected, I know kind of a personal question, I was just wanted to imagine how many I could get. Could you give me an idea 50? 100? 25?

CHRIS - is there a way once you are signed up to see WHO you have referred successfully for the 10k points? is there an area of the AMEX site when logged in that does this, can you explain clearly? I've supposedly referred a fair amount of people but want a way to know/track. Do you have to wait until the end of the billing cycle or something also?

Thanks Chris! I just received my card - thanks for sharing! Enjoy the bonus points.

Question for you though - in the welcome brochure on page 4 it says 'between canada and the continental USA - 35,000'. It seems to be an example but I can't seem to find a chart online confirming the number of points being 30k or 35k for a long haul flight redemption. Hopefully you know more about this!

    Thanks in advance!

"I've never had an aeroplan account. I applied and was approved for this AmEx. How do I figure out my new aeroplan number? Will it be on my first statement or what?"

    Hi Daniel,

American Express will generate one for you, if you didn't enter one in the online application. I believe it does show up on your statement at the bottom (if the bonus points were transferred to it). You can also call Amex and they should be able to tell you what it is. I'm not quite sure how it works with the password on the Aeroplan account, they must just create a temporary one for you.

No problem James. No, there doesn't appear to be a limit to the number of referrals, from what I can see. As far as I know, Amex doesn't have an issue with you posting your referral link on a website or forum, provided that website or forum has given you permission to do so. Basically, as long as you're not ticking anyone off, it should be fine.

How many referrals you can get will largely be a function of how many people see the link, *and* how much they trust what you're saying about the offer. So it could really vary quite a bit . If 100 people saw the offer, and they all really trusted what you had to say (let's say friends or family), you could very well end up with half of them tempted to sign up. But if it's 100 random people out of the blue, you might just end up with 1 or 2 that are tempted to sign up using your link.

    Hi Paul,

Unfortunately Amex does not have a way for a person to track who has and has not been successfully referred. They say it's for privacy reasons (since it's a matter of who has been approved or denied the application).

I too was worried about approved referrals not being tracked properly, but based on the numbers I've seen, vs what was expected based on the response, it does seem that they are being tracked properly in the Amex system. You just kind of have to go on blind faith though unfortunately.

Dianne: The 30,000 Aeroplan points should arrive in your account on the next billing statement after spending $500. The billing statements are generated once per month, so it kind of depends on the timing of when you spend the $500 and when your billing statement is generated.

I only ask because I had my brother apply beside me. And he got accepted right away and I haven't received the referral points yet.

How long does it take for it to show up? It looks like you are receiving the referral points right away...

    Has Chris_Myden been here?
       Chris_Myden on May 29th, 2014

    Hi David,

You should see your referral points on your next American Express statement (assuming the people you referred are approved by the time that statement is generated). The statements are generated once per month (as long as you have *any* sort of activity on your account, such as spending a few dollars, or paying off your bill).

I find that the Aeroplan points then show up in your account 2 days after the monthly statement is generated.

    Hi Mike,

Go to the American Express website and click on Rewards -> Refer A Friend. On this page you enter in your card info and can generate the referral emails and links.

One thing you can do is send a referral e-mail to yourself. Open that e-mail, click on the link, and you should be taken to a page with a URL that looks like this:

    https://www.americanexpress.com/canada/en/mgm/mgmeeApplynow.cgi?mgmerCard=aeroPlanGoldCard
